Growing older is one of the few experiences nearly all of us will share.

By 2030, one in six people in the world will be 60 or older. By 2050, that population is expected to reach 2.1 billion. We are also living roughly 30 years longer than our ancestors did at the beginning of the 20th century.

Living longer is an extraordinary achievement, but it also raises questions we haven’t had to consider on this scale before. How do we rethink health care, housing, technology, work and the communities we live in when so many of us will spend decades longer in the later years of life?

The University of Arizona created the Master of Science in Innovations in Aging to prepare for this changing reality.

I was asked to create this film shortly before the program launched, which left no time for an original shoot. We built it entirely from Getty Images footage and recruited a coworker for the voiceover who, conveniently, happened to be a professional singer. I focused on finding images that made the subject feel human and reflected aging as a long and varied part of life. We also created 15- and 30-second versions for social media. Three years later, the original film is still being used to promote the program.

The numbers are enormous, but ultimately this is a story about something very personal: how we want to live as we grow older.
